What Should Organizations Be Doing

As a minimum, Organizations should take the following steps to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability:

Conduct a Carbon Footprint Assessment: Measure and analyse the Organization's carbon footprint to understand its greenhouse gas emissions across operations, supply chain, and activities. This assessment provides a baseline for future reduction efforts.

Set Achievable Targets: Establish clear, achievable targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the global efforts to limit global warming. These targets should align with climate science and the Paris Agreement's goals.

Implement Energy Efficiency Measures: Identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and implement energy-efficient technologies and practices. This can include upgrading lighting systems, optimizing heating and cooling systems, and encouraging energy-saving behaviors among employees.

Reduce Waste and Promote Recycling: Implement waste reduction initiatives and promote recycling within the Organization. Adopt circular economy principles to minimize waste generation and maximize resource use.

Encourage Sustainable Transportation: Promote sustainable commuting options for employees, such as carpooling, cycling, or using public transportation. Encourage the use of electric or hybrid vehicles for company fleets.

Adopt Renewable Energy: Transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric power to power operations and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Engage and Educate Employees: Raise awareness among employees about climate change and sustainability. Encourage their participation in sustainability initiatives and provide training to help them adopt more eco-friendly practices.

Partner with Suppliers and Stakeholders: Collaborate with suppliers and stakeholders to jointly address climate change challenges and promote sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.

Regularly Monitor and Report Progress: Implement robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms to track progress towards carbon reduction targets and other sustainability goals. Transparently share this information with stakeholders to demonstrate commitment and accountability. This should ideally be done annually through updates to your Carbon Reduction Plan

Committing to sustainability should be seen as an ongoing journey requiring Organizations to regularly review plans and strategies, set new goals, and continuously improve environmental performance.

Taking these steps as a minimum will help Organizations lay a foundation for meaningful climate action and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for the planet and communities they serve.
